SEM is regarded as the birthplace of modern management of China. Over more than 120 years, the growths of its disciplines have been closely connected to the country's destiny, overlapping with the university's development. Within the University, the first Bachelor's degree in Economic Management was offered in 1978, followed by a Master's degree in 1981 and a Doctorate in 1986. In 1993, SEM was amongst the first 26 institutions to offer the MBA degree in China. In 2023, SEM had been prominent in its 10th position in the best business schools ranking in mainland China by Eduniversal for 6 consecutive years. In 2021, SEM simultaneously achieved international accreditation from EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA & BGA. By working through international accreditation progress, SEM has proudly become the 17th business school in mainland China to obtain both AACSB and EQUIS international accreditations and SEM's education quality has been internationally recognized. This reputation attracts elite students: over 90% of our Chinese undergraduates rank in the top 5% of their provincial standings, and about 50% of our postgraduate students come from the Project 985 or Project 211 universities. SEM is a founding member of the EFMD-supported Alliance of Chinese and European Business Schools (ACE). SEM has been active in developing its international networks with 67 international partner institutions and more than 10 institutional cooperative programs. Regarding connection with practice, SEM has more than 200 local government and corporate partners and has served the industries with consultations, policy recommendation and executive education. Each year SEM offers more than 50 English taught courses and has received international students from more than 30 countries.
