The predecessor of UCAS is the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS), established in 1978. It is the first graduate school and the largest graduate educational institution in the People's Republic of China. According to the 2023 Clarivate Analytics' ESI (Essential Science Indicators) Ranking, UCAS ranks No.1 among Mainland Chinese universities and 29st in the world. The economics and management discipline of UCAS originated from the outstanding research and practice of systems science, operations research, and quality control, developed by the best-known Chinese scientists such as Xuesen Qian, Luogeng Hua, Guozhi Xu and Yuanzhang Liu at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). In 1986, the Department of Management of GUCAS was established. In 2001, it was renamed the School of Management of GUCAS, with the well-known Chinese economist Siwei Cheng as the founding dean. In 2015, it was renamed as the School of Economics and Management (SEM) of UCAS. The school offers Master's (including MBA) and Ph.D. programs in economics, management, finance and statistics. It provides an excellent academic environment, and state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. The mission of the school is to conduct world-leading research, contribute knowledge, educate future leaders, and benefit society. Currently, SEM of UCAS has about 100 faculty members.
